(2/5 update)
Greetings friends. Thanks for checking out our High School Basketball website.
The latest blizzard has allowed me some time to catch up with the highscore.wdtv.com blog. This week's entry answers a simple question... If I could pick any area players to start a team, who would they be? The results are listed below. (Keep in mind, some teams I get to see more than others, and that may play a role in the selections).
Boys 1st Team:
Ty Garrison/Senior Guard, Fairmont Sr. (Top offensive threat on a deep team... Hit game-winner vs. Preston for West's best victory of the year).
T.J. Thompson/Senior Guard, Preston (Will be an excellent college player at WV Wesleyan... Can run offense and score... He's a big reason why the Knights are a state contender... Probably the best player in the area).
Chris Martinez/Junior Forward, Trinity (He's a major reason the Warriors have improved in recent weeks with wins over Wheeling Central, Gilmer Co. and Charleston Catholic... Can dominate a game on both ends of the floor).
Jerome Axton/Senior Guard, Bridgeport (Solid leader of the Indians who will always draw the opposition's best defender).
Josh Poling/Senior Forward, Tucker County (Has shown great improvement early in his senior season... A player that can score, rebound and defend).
Boys 2nd Team (The Next 5):
Nic Hammond/Junior Guard, Elkins
R.J. Johnson/Senior Guard, Philip Barbour
Bill Pecora/Senior Guard-Forward, Robert C. Byrd
Nolan Tucci/Junior Guard, Notre Dame
Sam Runner/Senior Center, Morgantown
Honorable Mention Picks: Coltan Brusk & Ethan Slaubaugh of Tucker County, Colton Goff of Preston, Ryan Sevier of Fairmont Senior, Terrence Hill of RCB.
Girls 1st Team:
Mariah Byard/Junior Guard, North Marion (Without a doubt, Byard is the area's best player and should make a run at state player of the year honors... A tremendous distributor of the basketball that can also hit a clutch shot... For reference, see the last 3 seconds of State Championship game).
Kelsi Wright/Senior Guard, North Marion (The future FSU Falcon is a key complement to Byard... Has assumed an even greater scoring role in the absence of Jessica Parsons).
Miki Glenn/Freshman Guard, Bridgeport (Burst on to the scene as a freshman this year and is a major reason why the Indians are off to a 13-3 start... Showing a great deal of potential early in her career).
Hayden Guiliani/Junior Guard, Trinity (Trinity's leading scorer... Could lead the Warriors to a deep playoff run).
Caroline Bennett/Senior Guard, Tucker County (Unappreciated point guard for the Mountain Lions... a solid veteran player).
Girls 2nd Team (The Next 5):
Sarah Folio/Senior Guard, Robert C. Byrd
Kara Seamon/Senior Guard, University
Amber Smith/Junior Guard, University
Hannah Strosnider/Senior Guard, Morgantown
Hailey Garrett/Junior Forward, North Marion
Thanks for checking in and we'll see you back here next week.

|2009-12-05 12:16:39 Lola {Hall} Simonton - archival videoWould you direct me to the dept. that handles old video of shows in 1968/69 that were produced in your studio. While in high school there was a dance competition show between area high schools and I was in one. I was from Doddridge County High School and would just love to have a copy for my son.

|2009-12-07 13:35:39 Mark Loudin - archival videoHi Lola, I don't work at WDTV anymore, but I know all of the older video/film is gone now. Sadly a former News Director tossed most of the archives tapes in the 80's. Lots of important history is long gone. Sorry.

|2010-01-14 10:50:16 BHS Fan - BHS HoopsWhat is Randolph/Lucas doing with freshman on the varsity? Woodrow Wilson played a freshman who threw in 24 - thats legit - BHS has 2 Juniors playing JV who could contribute greatly to their perimeter game but I guess we are playing for 2013 and grooming freshmen who haven't earned it yet? what about the seniors on the team (who haven't quit yet) - shouldn't they have a chance to win (or even play)?

|2010-02-07 15:33:22 rcb followerany 1st team that doesn't have sarah folio on it is bogus. have seen 2 of your 1st teamers play in person....couldn't carry folio's ######!! I now you have to cover a large area, but come on, pick the best players regardless.

|2010-02-22 14:48:12 news reporter - RCB-FolioPlease RCB follower, get real...you are definately showing your favortism because the picks for 1st team are exceptional players.
-
|2010-02-22 15:44:57 Area follower - Not so fastI am sorry news reporter. But with regards to Folio, your the one that is mistaken. You are right to say that the first team girls are exceptional, and this is not taking anything away from them. But Folio is a winner and as competetive an athlete as I have seen this season. She will not get as many accolades this season as she did last and that is b/c there is more around her and she does not have to do it all by herself. I saw her this weekend and it was a stunning performance. By far the best player on the floor. She is not only a scorer, but does everything else exceptionally well. She should definitely be on the first team.
-
|2010-02-23 11:11:21 news reporter - Area FollowerI think you said it best with being competitive....there are 4 other players on the floor with her....Perhaps being a team player would have placed her on the 1st team.

|2010-02-23 15:15:14 Area followerI just want to make sure I understand this post correctly...Are you really saying she is not a team player? If so, that is an absolutely ridiculous statement. (and if your involved in the ranking you definetely should step down b/c your statements are absurd) I am not a Byrd fan by any means, but she is in no way a selfish player. Do you not forget that before she and her group got to Byrd, the female bball program was a joke. She, along with others, have them ranked high in the state at this point, and that is not a coincidence. Watching her, you can see that she is only concerned with winnning, period. And I ***ume your saying she is selfish b/c she takes more shots than others on her team...wake up...that is usually what happens when your the best player. I don't see anyone tellin Jerome Axton that he should take less shots?? Sometimes the most selfish thing you can do is not take shots and watch your team lose. I am astounded that she would be called selfish and that discredits ...

|2010-02-23 17:59:34 news reporterI'm sorry you are so defensive but Yes, you interpreted my post accurately! There are alot of attributes that make up what you call "the best player" and it would be pointless for me to list since you seem and openly express that "she is the best...You should speak to her fellow teammates and see if they agree..you would be surprised and there are others on her team who can excute and shoot! That is one reason Jeremy Axton is "one of the best players" on his team! Team = 5!
-
|2010-02-23 20:31:43 AnonymousFirst of all its Jerome Axton...not Jeremy. And I do not think she is necessarily the "best player" in the area. But I do believe that she is good enough to be on the first team. AND I AM FROM BRIDGEPORT!!! So don't throw up that I am getting defensive because I am a homer or somethin like that. I have seen her play for some time and I know some of her teammates and parents on the team very well...and they speak very highly of her. I agree a 100 percent that her teammates are more than capable, and the game that I saw this weekend she performed very well. Not only as a scorer, but as a distributor. My question is when Bryant Irwin took 20 or 30 shots in a game...Was he being selfish??? Heck no..he was the best player on the floor and his team depended on him to score. She is not at that level, but when I watch Jerome take 15 or 20 shots I am thrilled b/c I know Bport has been put in a great position. While we are at it, why dont we just tell Migel Lockett to not shoot the ba...
